FABRIC DESCRIPTION

The description is made on the basis of microscopical observation up to x30 (see image of fresh cross section above and table below).

Orange-firing clay with predominance of quartz and feldspar. Augite is detectable and clearly present, but not substantially. The inclusions in this fabric are moderately sorted to very poorly sorted. Particle size differs from virtually absent to large (<90->1000). The fabric contains at least 15% inclusions. There is a variety of characteristics, expressed in the type and amount of secondary inclusions, as well as hardness and porosity. The predominant Munsell colours are 5YR 4/4 - 4/6, 7.5 YR 4/4 - 4/6 and 5/6. After refiring this is limited to 5 YR 4/6 - 5/6 and 7.5 YR 5/6.

125 sherds have been attributed to this fabric, all of which derive from Votive Deposit II, the La Fornace survey and the Southwest necropolis (see: Gnade, 1992; Nijboer et al., 1995; Bouma, 1996). The fabric has a restricted repertoire, which mainly involves cooking/food preparation. Wares: Coarse ware

Vessels forms: Jar (olla), large bowl (teglia), bowl/lid, lid, votive terracotta (one example). Date: late 6h, 5th, 4th, early 3th centuries BC.

This fabric is related to:

SAT I/(II).AD*.ms-vps(1-4).a, variety of characteristics/(slightly) gritty:
Impasto bruno, impasto rosso and a few sherds coarse ware. The fabric is locally made. Dated late 9th to 5th/4th centuries BC, most of which to the 8th, 7th century BC. Vessel forms: Jar, storage jar, miniature jar, miniature cup, tile, bowl, large bowl, lid, plate, holmos, fornello, spindle-whorl, spool, loomweight and mug.
